The Manchester Township Board of Education, at their February 27 meeting, honored a number of high school students for their achievements in academics, music, and community service.

Selected to the All Shore Jazz Band were Joshua P. and Christopher J. [more].   Lauren C. received a 2008 Prudential Spirit of the Community Award for being among the top 10% of students in the state in the area of community service[more] .

“These young people truly represent what our school district is all about,” commented Superintendent of Schools, Dr. William E. DeFeo.

RDS Grant

Ralph Lotierzo, Principal of Regional Day School, introduced Tracy Fuller, an adaptive physical education teacher at the school, who made a presentation about several grants for bicycles and other equipment that she applied for and received for the school.

New Courses at HS

Alex George, Vice Principal at Manchester Township High School, explained two new courses that the board was being asked to approve as additions for the 2008-2009 school year.  Economics, he said, is the third of four elective business courses to be introduced under a major revision of the school’s business department.  Already introduced were Money, Banking & Finance and Introduction to Business, with plans to introduce Marketing & Advertising in 2009-2010.  A new offering in the Social Studies department for 2008-2009 would be Psychology, which George said students have shown a strong interest in and would be a good complement to the Sociology course already offered.

Budget

The district’s 2008-2009 tentative budget has been submitted to the county and state and the district is awaiting approvals on the budget as well as a proposal to introduce an all-day kindergarten program next year, DeFeo said.

RS Principal to Retire

Dr. DeFeo took a moment to recognize Ridgeway Elementary School Principal, Janette Lada, who announced her retirement effective Sept. 1, 2008.  “Dr. Lada has done an outstanding job and we thank her for all she has done for the children of Manchester,” DeFeo commented.  “She has been a real asset and is somebody that our school district will miss a great deal.”

No Recalled Beef in Manchester

Business Administrator Peter Corigliano said he wanted to assure the Board and the public that Manchester did not receive any of the beef involved in the recent recall, although some newspaper reports mistakenly listed Manchester as one of the districts that received some of the beef.  He commended food service contractor, Sodexho, for their swift response in determining that none of the recalled beef had been received by the district.
