Superintendent's Message Winter 2007

Dear Parents, Staff & Community Members,

As you are probably aware, I will be retiring this year (June, 2008).  Working with the Manchester Township Board of Education, administrators, faculty, staff and community has been one of the real pleasures of my career.

We have adhered to our motto of offering a quality education to all of our students at a reasonable price.  Working together, our list of accomplishments has grown each of my eleven years in Manchester.  We can all be proud of the Manchester School District—I know that I am.

The Board of Education is conducting the search for my replacement.  The New Jersey School Boards Association is assisting the Board of Education in the search.  Focus groups designed to allow input on the selection of the future superintendent have been conducted for administrators, faculty, support staff and community members.  A review of the documentation submitted by candidates is underway.  Once that is complete, a first round of interviews will be scheduled.  This will be followed by a reference check and second round of interviews for finalists.  A visit to the district(s) of the leading candidate(s) will probably follow the final interview.  The entire process should be complete before the spring.

Once a new superintendent is selected, the search for a new Business Administrator/Board Secretary will begin.  Mr. Corigliano is also retiring this year.  His contribution to Manchester has been something special.  He is a professional of unquestioned integrity, with expertise in the areas of school finance, transportation, buildings and grounds and school district labor issues.

The search for a replacement will not be easy.  It will follow a process similar to the one used to select a new superintendent.  Every attempt will be made to have the new superintendent play a significant role in choosing the new Business Administrator.  The closeness of the working relationship amongst the Board of Education, Superintendent and Business Administrator necessitate this type of process.

I can assure you that the present Board of Education, Superintendent and Business Administrator will do everything possible to fill the open positions with professionals who care about the education of our children, understand the relationship between the school community and the community at large and have a value system that includes honesty and integrity.

Have a joyous and safe holiday season!

William E. DeFeo, Ed.D.
