A new courtyard garden and play area for kindergarten students will be constructed at Ridgeway Elementary School, thanks to a $4,000 Lowe's Toolbox for Education grant. The new 'Kinder Garden' is the brainchild of Ridgeway Media Center Specialist Geri Szoke, who wrote the grant application. Szoke was also honored by the board and her principal, Diane Pedroza, for her work on the grant. Pedroza and Szoke said that Lowe's employees had already been out to begin planning the courtyard project and will work closely with school staff as the work progresses.
As part of the Lowe's Heroes program, Lowe's employees recently took on a project to restore the MTES garden, which had fallen into disrepair. MTES Principal, Dr. Fran Scudese, said they not only sent volunteers to do the work, but also supplied materials including mulch, pavers, and a beautiful new trellis arbor. They even made the garden accesible to a student who uses a wheelchair. [see related article]
