While in the process of studying about renewable energy sources, students at Manchester Township High School researched and constructed solar ovens. Unlike other sources of energy, solar energy is free and considered inexhaustible. Joe Gawlik, instructor of the Energy, Power & Transportation class, explained the process. “After an initial test resulted in maxing out the thermometer at 220 degrees Fahrenheit, the students decided to use an oven thermometer,” he said. “Using simple household materials to focus the sun’s energy, the ovens were able to achieve temperatures in excess of 250 degrees. Water boils at 200 degrees. It was discovered that these ovens performed best around 1:00 p.m. when the sun’s energy is at its strongest.” The next question was: Could the energy actually be used? The students proved that it could by cooking hot dogs in their ovens and serving them piping hot for a late afternoon snack. Gawlik said the research also showed how this technology is being used in third world countries where other forms of energy are either not available or too expensive. He added that the obvious drawbacks to this type of energy are clouds and time of day limitations. |
