The Industrial Arts Department at Manchester Township High School took on a real-world project that also helped the community when they designed and manufactured 12 picnic tables for the Manchester Little League, with the help of the school’s Habitat for Humanity club. “Supervised by instructor Mike Boyd, our wood shop students precut all materials, which were supplied by the Little League, while the drafting & design students designed and used fixtures to assist in the creation of the sub assemblies,” said Joe Gawlik, drafting instructor and advisor to the Habitat club. “On the first day of spring break, the Habitat club members gathered in the wood shop to finish the final assemblies. This was a terrific service learning project. While developing an understanding of the manufacturing process, students learned how careful planning and teamwork can serve as a tool to help the community. We can only hope that the Little League will have many years of service from our time tested design.”
