Red Ribbon Week originated in 1985 in honor of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, who was kidnapped and killed in Mexico while investigating drug traffickers. His family wore red ribbons as a sign of respect for his belief that one person can make a difference. It has since become a national weekly celebration. The Manchester Middle School PEPP Club observed Red Ribbon Week with multiple activities designed to encourage students to remain drug free. On Monday, all students signed a “Pledge to be Drug Free” ribbon, which was then displayed in the main hall of the school. Tuesday’s theme was “Slam the Door on Drugs”. Homerooms competed in a door decorating contest and the winner received a Dunkin Donuts breakfast. “Red’s Hot and Drugs are Not” was the idea for Wednesday, when students and staff were encouraged to wear red. Thursday, the theme was “Dream It, Believe It, and Achieve It.” Students were encouraged to come to school dressed for the profession they aspire to. Friday was “Team Up Against Drugs” day, with students wearing their favorite sports team jersey or hat. |
