The children in Mrs. Fusaro’s Kindergarten class teamed up with Mrs. Pate and students from Mrs. DeFeo’s 2nd grade to create a commemorative display to honor the civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The children's work, which celebrated cultural diversity as well as pride in one's community, is displayed in the main lobby of the Ridgeway School.
The students in Mrs. Fusaro's class first learned about Dr. King through literature. This was followed by discussions and role-playing. The children then completed a writing activity in which they asked a classmate to be their friend, and Mrs. Fusaro took a photograph of each child with their friend in a pose of their choice.
This particular class is made unique by its diversity. Together they came up with the perfect way to display their understanding of Dr. King’s dream, using group shots of the friends joined with a visually powerful message captured in a photograph of their hands united as one class.
Dr. King would be so proud of them! Mrs. Fusaro and Ridgeway School certainly are!
