Intro to Communications & Journalism is a study of the tangible product created by journalists. It will give the students maximum exposure to the various ways that the working journalist effectively communicates with the audience. The course will explore how news is produced and delivered, as well as the traditions and conventions that govern the culture of journalism.  In addition, the course will cover the technical aspects of journalism: writing, printing, computer layouts, typesetting, editing, photography, etc. This technical knowledge will assist the students in contributing to the school newspaper and the yearbook.

Grades 10-12

Students will explore the 21st century skills needed by a journalist. Students will assist in working both independently and collectively while focusing on writing copy, layout, graphic design, digital photography, audio/visual stories and generating stories for yearbook, news magazine and online.  Students will engage in activities that may include, but are not limited to independent reading and task benchmarks, completion of course generated reflections. Student will assist in creating two issues of a news magazine, one video story, one multimedia project, and contribute to web based news and yearbook.

Grades 10-12                                                    5 Credits

Students will assist in working both independently and collectively while focusing on writing copy, layout, graphic design, digital photography, audio/visual stories and generating stories for yearbook and online news site. Students in Career Journalism II are eligible for assistant editorship roles as well as independent multimedia projects to support the augmented reality app for the yearbook. Select students may be eligible for induction into the MTHS Chapter of the Quill and Scroll International Honor Society for High School Journalists.

Prerequisites: Career Communications/Journalism.

Grade 12

Students will serve as journalism program leaders through a variety of roles, including but not limited to editor-in-chief, senior copy editor, scheduling editor, photography manager, and video editor. Students will assist with photo file management and maintaining/catalog images taken by student photographers. Select students may be eligible for induction into the MTHS Chapter of the Quill and Scroll International Honor Society for High School Journalists.

Prerequisites:Career Communications/Journalism II.

Advanced Journalism focuses specifically on the skills involved in constructing and printing the school yearbook and newspaper. Students are required to write, proofread and lay out their articles and spreads using Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Word and Adobe Photoshop. Through a variety of experiences, the students will become adept in the multi-faceted realm of journalism.

Prerequisite: Intro to Journalism

Advanced Journalism II students not only apply the tasks and skills they’ve already honed on the yearbook and student online news site but will serve as scheduling assistants, managing editors, copy editors, junior editors, assistants to the editor-in-chief, and mentors for first year students. Students also assist with content decisions for the MTHS Student Publications and have more opportunities for photography and video editing to support the yearbook. Select students may be eligible for induction into the MTHS Chapter of the Quill and Scroll International Honor Society for High School Journalists.

Prerequisites:  Advanced Journalism I

Grade 10-12                                                   5 Credits

Students will serve as editors-in-chief or co-editors of the yearbook or online news publication and are responsible for the overall planning and production of the publications; determine and approve all content including theme, design, colors, fonts, and templates; meet publication deadlines and ensure balanced coverage. Select students may be eligible for induction into the MTHS Chapter of the Quill and Scroll International Honor Society for High School Journalists.
