Foundations of English

Grade 9-12
Through a variety of texts and resources, students will develop skills reading informational and narrative text. In addition, they will write informational, argumentative and narrative pieces and learn to synthesize text-based evidence from multiple sources into arguments. Instruction will target students’ specific struggles and provide a solid foundation for instruction in English 9. This course will only be administratively assigned based upon predetermined proficiency measures.

This standards-based course engages students in major literary genres and themes, and the correct use of standard English by means of writing, reading, speaking, listening, viewing and media literacy activities.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of 8th Grade English Language Arts or AIM Summer Program.

English 10 is devoted to the study of American literature. This course will include an analysis of literature, an intensive study of vocabulary, and a review of Standard English usage. Major units studied are Justice/Injustice, Individuality and Conformity, Pursuit of the American Dream, Life Transformations and Shakespearean Literatures. Reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and media literacy activities will form the basis of course work.
English 10 Honors

English 11 is devoted to the study of British literature. This course includes an analysis of literature, intensive study of vocabulary, and an overview of standardized testing skills and strategies. The course is broken into 10 units of study, including: Tales of Ancient Heroes, The Tragic Hero, Sonnets, Social Commentary, The Sting of Satire, Romanticism, Disillusionment and Desire, Research Paper, Standardized Test Prep, and Writing Portfolio Assessment. Reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and media literacy activities will form the basis of coursework.

English 12 will be devoted to the study of World literature and a development of appreciation for world authors. This course will include an analysis of literature, intensive study of vocabulary, and a review of Standard English usage. Reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and media literacy activities will form the basis of coursework.
English 12 Honors

English 12 Honors is devoted to the study of World Literature and the refinement of scholarly techniques and literary research. This course emphasizes the study and consideration of the literary, cultural, and human significance of selected great works and is designed to introduce students to the pleasures of exploring literary masterpieces as well as to reinforce their skills in literary analysis and research. An important goal of the class is to promote an understanding of the works in their cultural/historical contexts and of the enduring human values and conflicts that span various literary traditions, designed to put students in a continual process of interpreting, confronting, discovering, and discussing human experience.
The course gives special attention to critical thinking and writing within a framework of cultural diversity as well as comparative and interdisciplinary analysis. Upon completion of this course, students will have gained a broader knowledge of some of the world’s most significant cultural traditions and literary masterpieces. Moreover, they will have gained a fundamental understanding of the terminology and characteristics of the literature.

AP Literature and Composition

Advanced Placement English is designed much like a college seminar and is devoted to the study of works of literary merit from American, British and World literature. Students will engage in a variety of analytical approaches to each of the texts and be able to express thoughts and ideas with coherence and clarity both orally and in writing.

This Advanced Placement course engages learners in developing into skilled readers of prose. Specific emphasis is placed on rhetorical devices and contexts. AP Language and Composition students become skilled writers who write for a variety of purposes. This class is designed like a college seminar and is designed to enable students to read complex texts with insight and to write prose that is sophisticated, complex and powerful.

This course is a workshop in the basics of creative writing. It will focus on the writing process, literary elements/terms, varying genres and forms, thematic studies, and the relation of creative works to culture. Students will be encouraged to find their own creative voice and develop the habits of creative writers.

This elective course emphasizes the development of the short story by examining the major literary elements of the genre, such as plot, theme, point of view, character, setting, symbol, and irony. Students will read stories from a variety of authors, genres and time-periods to evaluate the similarities, differences and attributes of the writers and stories examined.

Film & Media as Literature

Students will study film and media as a form of literature that communicates information but also reflects the society of its time period. Students will view films which serve as milestones in the development of the film as a literary form, discuss the various aspects of those films, and write about those films. In study of the course, students will examine the intricate relationship among film, media and literature. Students will analyze selected novels, short stories and/or plays in relation to film versions to evaluate the effects and opportunities of the various mediums. In addition, students will analyze independent screenplays and/or television scripts to evaluate the role these stories play in the cannon of film and literature and their impact on society or culture.
