Naval Science I
Grades 9-12
5 Credits
This course will provide the first year cadet with an introduction to the NJROTC Program. NJROTC is a character development program designed to aid the student in becoming successful in life’s challenges. The curriculum will include a balance of time between classroom study, military activities, physical fitness, and orientation trips. It will also present cadets with an opportunity to learn and practice leadership traits and principles. Also covered will be the mission, capabilities, and construction of today’s modern Navy ships and aircraft. Cadets will be introduced to techniques to help develop good study habits and time management skills which can be utilized in all academic courses; enlightening the total school experience. Cadets in the MTHS program are eligible to compete with other military units in close order drill competitions.
Naval Science II
Grades 10-12
5 Credits
This course will build on the general introduction provided in Naval Science I, to further develop the traits of citizenship and leadership in cadets. It will also introduce cadets to the technical areas of naval science study and provide a deeper awareness of the importance of the world oceans to the United States. The course will also cover such topics as: naval weapons systems, including naval guns and guided missiles, navigation fundamentals and rules of the nautical road. Instruction in basic individual, squad, and platoon close order drill is continued. The course also includes field trips to Naval and Marine Corps activities as well as visits to Navy ships. Cadets in the program are also eligible to participate on the unit’s drill team and color guard.

Naval Science III
Grades 11-12
5 Credits
This course will further develop the trait of leadership in students and introduce cadets to the vital importance of Military Justice and International Law. The course will continue with the introduction of Naval Science to include Astronomy, Meteorology, and the Maneuvering Board. The course will also expand on the cadet’s knowledge of Seamanship, Navigation, and Oceanography. Introduction in basic individual, squad, and platoon close order drill is continued. The course also includes field trips to Naval and Marine Corps activities as well as visits to Navy and/or Coast Guard ships. Cadets in the program are also eligible to participate on the unit’s drill team and color guard.

Naval Science IV
Grade 12
5 Credits
The purpose of this course is to build on the basic qualities of a good follower and an effective leader provided in Naval Science 1, 2, and 3 and to take a more in-depth look at what leadership is and how to maximize your abilities in the leadership area. The course will include instruction in naval leadership traits, principle, and practice. The course will also cover the theory of human motivation and the responsibilities of leading by example. In addition, the course will cover the concepts of authority, criticism and moral responsibility of the naval officer. Instruction in basic individual, squad and platoon close order drill is continued. The course also includes field trips to Naval and Marine Corps activities as well as visits to Naval and Coast Guard ships. Cadets in the program are also eligible to participate on the unit’s drill team and color guard.

Global Studies I
Grade 9-12
5 Credits
This course is an ROTC elective designed to introduce students to the study of world affairs, regional studies and cultural awareness. It delves into the history, geography, religions, languages, culture, political systems, economics, social issues, environmental concerns and human rights.
The Middle East – A review of the region from the earliest days as the cradle of Western Civilization + The birthplace of Judaism and Christianity + Islam. It then looks at more recent challenges of war and terrorism. It considers changes the Middle East underwent in the 20th century + the spread of nuclear weapons in the 21srt Century. Discussion of the region will include its most sought after natural resource: oil.
Global Studies II
Grade 10-12 5 Credits
This course is an ROTC elective designed to introduce students to the study of world affairs, regional studies and cultural awareness. It delves into the history, geography, religions, languages, culture, political systems, economics, social issues, environmental concerns and human rights.
Asia – a general overview of Eastern religions and the region’s peoples. Students will study Japan, Korea, and China in East Asia, as well as India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan in South Asia. This period of instruction looks at what unites and divides these countries. It will also look at Asia’s environmental and social challenges; along with researching the region’s impact on U.S. security and its economy.
