Senior Places Third in International Competition

by Felicia Roehm '21

Senior Francesca Roehm entered the Norm Brodsky Business Concept Competition at Rider University in October. The international competition gives young entrepreneurs the opportunity to express their ideas to experienced and accomplished entrepreneurs and professors. Roehm's business concept was a company named You Sized. "It is an e-commerce based company that sells customized jeans and dress pants to buyers' personal measurements with a focus on fit and comfort," Roehm explained. "It can include a spandex panel insert for smoothing. The idea came from personal struggles of finding pants that fit and I saw there was a need for it by telling others about my idea.”

She wrote a 400-word essay explaining her concept and didn't expect much to come from it. However, she found out on December 11 that she was in the top 25 participants in the competition. On December 23, Roehm made the top 5 and would now present her idea in front of three judges on January 16, 2021.

She worked on her presentation several hours a day while seeking help from family and friends who work in the fashion and marketing industry. Roehm said what was most challenging was presenting because she had to memorize her presentation.

Another challenge she faced was making sure she got all her facts in the four minutes she had to present. On January 30th the winners were announced and Roehm placed third in the worldwide competition. “My goal was to place, so I was so happy and excited when I realized I got 3rd," she said. Roehm was the only company out of ten that got a comment from Rider’s University lead entrepreneurship professor, Lisa Teach, who said she was interested in buying her product. “That was the most exciting part,” Roehm said.

Roehm plans to study entrepreneurship in college and aspires to make You Sized a reality in the future.
