MTHS News Editors Create Special Local History Edition

Manchester Township High School juniors, Val Kohan and Sam Verdi, Editors-in-Chief of the school online news site, The Talon, created a special print edition centered upon the history of Manchester, Lakehurst, and Whiting. The full color news magazine is complete with photos, also taken by Kohan and Verdi.

“Our interest in local history started when we discovered mysterious ruins and train tracks in the woods. Since then, we have been researching and discovering the past of our town,” the editors wrote in the introduction to the magazine. The issue includes sections on the origins of Manchester, railroads in Manchester and Lakehurst, the Hindenburg disaster, and a piece about Doctor’s Pond in Whiting, site of a former hotel and nudist colony.

“This massive endeavor by Val and Sam was a labor of love and represents hours upon hours of their time properly researching, writing, and laying out the issue,” said journalism teacher Jill Ocone. “The two made several visits to local historical sites and societies, so much so Sam was asked to volunteer at both the Ocean County Historical Society and the Lakehurst Historical Society, and she took both up on their offers and is now a guide/docent at both places.”

“This beautiful and professional magazine issue is truly special and exemplifies why Manchester is a great place to be,” said Ocone.
