Final Farewell to 2016-2017

June 2017

To all our Ridgeway Families,

Thank you for your support and interest during this past school year. It's hard to believe that we are about to conclude 2016-2017.I hope you and your children enjoyed your classroom experience.

Last week our fifth graders enjoyed a beautiful end of the year celebration, thanks to many dedicated teachers as well as our substitute music teacher, Mrs. Zalom. A big shout out to her for coordinating our end of the year programs so that we could enjoy our students' voices. She also did a wonderful job coordinating all our end of the year programs and a final music assembly on the last day of school. It was wonderful.

Ridgeway is going to miss several staff members who are retiring this year:

  • Mrs. Sonia Castro - Music teacher
  • Mrs. Deb Iacovelli - Learning Consultant
  • Mr. Bill Sears- Head Custodian
  • Mrs. Jamey Stofko - Occupational Therapist
  • Mrs. Geri Szoke -Media Specialist
  • Mrs.Peg Viola - grade five teacher

We also have a few teachers on leave as we wrap up the school year.We are looking forward to their return in 2017-2018.

Summer Jump Start will be starting on July 5th.If your child is eligible for that program, you would have received a permission slip in the backpack.

Big news at Ridgeway for the upcoming year....we won the $15,000.00 MTEF grant to be used for the creation of a STEAM lab. Thanks to the hard work of Mrs. Bachonski, Mrs. Policastro, and Mrs. Velazquez this vision is coming to fruition. I would also like to thank Mrs. Szoke who has written several grants over the last few years and has consistently done a great job providing us with guidance in for grant writing.I thank all of them and of course, the MTEF for this great opportunity!

Our teachers and administrative team did an outstanding job assisting with placing our students in the right classrooms, with the right teachers, and with the right supports for 2017-2018.Many factors go into placing a student. We consider whether or not they need a teacher with a basic skills support, or in class support, or ESL, or with a paraprofessional. We also consider the interactions between students and student behaviors. If you have any questions about the placement of your child, please give me a call.

Congratulations to Mrs. Raquel Bachonski who is our new Media Specialist. Also congratulations to several staff members who are moving up or out of their classrooms to work with new grade levels and in new assignments.

Our new music teacher is Mrs. Stacey O'Connor. Mrs. O'Connor has been working at MTES for a number of years. We are so excited to have her at Ridgeway.

Are you wondering how to keep summer regression in check? Please read and write daily. Keep a summer journal and continue with our family reading initiatives like read alouds and discussions. These are great ways to help your child stay ahead of the game. Practice those math facts! Visit the library and schedule those play dates!

Keep an eye open for our summer newsletter which will go out in August and give you a few specifics for the upcoming year.
