MTHS to 101.5 FM

Manchester Township High School's journalism class had the opportunity to take their learning outside of the classroom this week with an immersive field trip to top radio station, New Jersey 101.5 FM. This trip allowed these students, some who are considering a career in communications, to gain first-hand, behind-the-scenes experience of the fast-paced world of broadcast and digital journalism.

Accompanied by MTHS journalism teachers Tommy Farrell and Stefani Leonard, along with MTHS guidance counselor Rachel Kelly, Manchester's students explored how traditional FM radio continues to serve as a vital community resource. Station professionals spoke to students about the radio's role in delivering timely news, local updates, and entertainment to diverse audiences, sustaining influence and reach even in an age dominated by digital media.

Some students experienced being on the air with hosts Dennis Malloy and Judi Franco, and witnessed Jen Ursillo's 11:30 AM newscast up close and personal.

The trip also offered students a look at the inner workings of a modern newsroom. They observed how journalists research, fact-check, and produce stories for both digital and on-air platforms, all while upholding journalistic integrity and meeting tight deadlines. Presenters discussed the growing influence of social media, podcasting, and multimedia storytelling in reaching today’s audiences.

“This experience opened our students’ eyes to the many possibilities in journalism and media,” said teacher Tommy Farrell. “It connected classroom concepts to real-world careers and showed how powerful a well-told story can be—whether it’s heard on the radio or read on a screen.”

The trip was part of Manchester Township High School's ongoing effort to provide hands-on learning experiences and inspire future storytellers, reporters, and media professionals.
