The Manchester Township School District mourns the passing of Dr. William E. DeFeo, a respected educational leader whose 40-year career in education and more than a decade of service to Manchester Township Schools left a lasting legacy in our schools and community.

Dr. DeFeo served as Superintendent of Manchester Township Schools from July 1997 until his retirement on July 1, 2008. During his tenure, he was a dedicated and visionary leader who worked to strengthen educational opportunities for Manchester students and help position the district for the future.

Among his most significant accomplishments was leading the effort that resulted in the passage of a 2002 referendum that provided for additions and improvements at Manchester Township High School, Manchester Township Middle School, and Whiting School. The projects represented an important investment in the district's schools and students and helped meet the needs of a growing community.

Dr. DeFeo also understood the importance of a community investing in its students beyond the classroom. He was instrumental in establishing the Manchester Township Educational Foundation, creating a lasting partnership between the community and the school district to support educational opportunities for students.

His commitment to students continues through the MTEF Dr. William E. DeFeo Scholarship, which provides financial assistance to graduating Manchester Township High School seniors pursuing college or post-secondary education. The scholarship bearing his name has continued to support Manchester graduates for years, carrying forward his belief in the power of education and opportunity

“Dr. DeFeo’s impact on Manchester Township Schools cannot be measured only by the years he served as superintendent. I had the privilege of working with him throughout my entire career in Manchester, and I witnessed firsthand his deep commitment to our students, our staff, and our community,” says Diane Pedroza, Superintendent of Schools, Manchester Township School District. “He was a visionary leader who understood that strong schools require both a commitment to educational excellence and a community willing to invest in its children.

What I will remember most is his genuine belief in the power of education and the opportunities it creates for students. His leadership helped shape the schools we have today, but perhaps even more meaningful is the legacy he created through the Manchester Township Educational Foundation and the opportunities that continue to be provided to our graduates through the scholarship that bears his name.

Dr. DeFeo left an extraordinary mark on Manchester, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have learned from and worked alongside him. His legacy will continue through the students, educators, schools, and community he cared so deeply about. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.”

The Manchester Township School District extends its deepest condolences to Dr. DeFeo's family, friends, former colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him. We are grateful for his four decades of service to education, and for the lasting legacy he leaves in Manchester Township.
