ECO EXPLORERS FOSSIL DIG

The Manchester Township Middle School (MTMS) Eco Explorers Club concluded an exciting year of outdoor learning with a memorable fossil hunting adventure at the Poricy Park Fossil Beds in Middletown, New Jersey.

The day began at the Poricy Park Nature Center, where students learned about the fascinating process of fossil formation and how scientists identify different types of fossils. Using fossil identification guides, students examined and classified fossil specimens, gaining hands-on experience as young paleontologists before heading out into the field.

The excitement continued at the fossil beds, where students waded through the stream and carefully sifted through sediment in search of prehistoric treasures. Their discoveries included fossilized shells, shark teeth, and belemnites, an extinct squid-like marine animal that lived millions of years ago. Students were amazed to learn that the area they were exploring was once covered by an ancient ocean approximately 72 million years ago, meaning they were literally walking on what had once been the seabed. Along the way, they also enjoyed observing present-day wildlife, including several tadpoles found in the stream, providing an opportunity to connect the past and present through nature.

The adventure concluded with a picnic lunch on a beautiful spring day, giving students time to reflect on their discoveries and celebrate a successful year of exploration, learning, and environmental stewardship.

This trip marked the final Eco Explorers outing of the school year. The district is excited to announce that the club will continue next year thanks to a HIPP grant awarded through the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) and a generous donation from Tilton Body Works in Lakewood. Their support helps provide meaningful outdoor learning experiences that inspire curiosity, scientific inquiry, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

As the Eco Explorers look ahead to another year of adventure, student feedback and ideas will help shape future experiences as the club continues to foster discovery, environmental awareness, and a lifelong love of learning.
