Summer break is often a time for students to recharge and enjoy time with family and friends. At Manchester Township High School, however, many of our students also choose to spend part of their summer giving back to our community. Volunteerism is woven into the fabric of our district, and throughout the year our students consistently step forward to support neighbors, organizations, and community members with their generous hearts. Whether school is in session or not, they continue to represent Manchester with kindness and a willingness to help others.
That spirit was on full display on Monday, July 20, when approximately 30 members of the Manchester Township High School football team, along with Coach Farrell, visited Crestwood Village VII in Whiting for the program's fourth annual Tech 101.
Since 2023, the MTHS football team has partnered with senior communities throughout Manchester Township to provide residents with hands-on technology assistance. During this year's two-hour visit, student-athletes helped residents with a variety of everyday technology needs, including iPad logins, laptop WiFi connections, cell phone troubleshooting, USB flash drives, email accounts, and other general technology support.
The residents were incredibly appreciative of the team's patience and willingness to help. Many even asked for the football team's upcoming schedule so they could come out and cheer on the players this season!
While technology was the reason for the visit, the relationships built throughout the afternoon became the true highlight. Conversations flowed naturally across generations, creating meaningful connections for both students and residents. One player spent nearly an hour talking with a resident who had worked as a music producer, while another helped a resident who had recently celebrated his ninetieth birthday regain access to his email account. Moments like these remind us that every conversation has the power to create lasting connections.
Superintendent Pedroza often reminds us that it takes a village to raise and educate a child. That village extends far beyond our school walls and includes the families, neighbors, and community members who support our students every day. Events like Tech 101 bring that philosophy to life by allowing our students to share their knowledge and talents with members of our community who are looking for a helping hand. At the same time, our students gain wisdom, perspective, and meaningful relationships from the people they serve, strengthening the bonds that make Manchester such a special place to call home.
The Manchester Township School District is proud of these student-athletes for representing our schools with integrity, kindness, and generosity. Their commitment to serving others is just one example of the many ways our students make a positive impact throughout the year. Their actions continue to demonstrate that learning, leadership, and compassion extend far beyond the classroom.
